FAQ's on Multidisciplinary Treatment of Eating
Disorders
Q: What kinds of professionals are involved in
outpatient Eating Disorder treatment?
A: Most commonly involved are the primary care
physician, psychotherapist, psychiatrist and nutrition
therapist. Dance, art and occupational therapists are also
utilized.
Q: How long is the recovery for these disorders?
A: Recovery is possible but it is important to remember
that recovery can take many years. Good treatment
outcome is enhanced by early intervention, less
coexisting psychological diagnoses and a strong support
system.
Q: With so many complex psychological and
physiological needs, these patients are a lot of work!
How do I manage this?
The key to working with these patients is the treatment
team. In a team that communicates
well, everyone knows where their responsibilities to the
patient begin and end, therefore it minimizes the
workload on any one individual. It is unwise and
unnecessary for a solo practicioner to attempt to manage
eating disorder treatment alone.
